Once you are up, you'll notice that the rope tension is only a
fraction of what you might have experienced water skiing.
Use the rope to position yourself in different parts of the wake.
Find the groove right behind the boat that you can surf with no
tension on the rope, if you carve into the wave just right. You may
need to pull in on the rope to bring yourself closer to the boat.

It's quite a visual experience for the passengers too, because the
surfer is continuously just a few feet away as one could never
watch in an ocean setting. If the boat is weighted properly and
you are cutting in and down into the wave with your weight forward,
the rope will be completely slack. You can decide to toss the rope
into the boat and surf the longest wave you have ever experienced.
