The cool and moist air in the valley is conducive for hoary lichens
to drape the trees and give them an aura of mystery. During the winter,
when the snow is many feet deep, deer and elk feed on these plants and
reach branches they can't touch in the summer. The presence of these lichens
is a positive sign that the forest is NOT contaminated by sulphur dioxide
and pollutants. Moral: what look's creepy, can be healthy.
