Sunrise on Grand Lake / Spirit Lake. Water Sprites dance as sunlight strikes the water!
A week later large sheets of ice formed and produced awesome pinging and groaning sounds.
Arapahoe Indians call this "Spirit Lake" because of its powerful visual and aural emanations.
Indians feared the lake because of a great tragedy which occurred to women and children
on a raft during a bloody battle of Arapahoes & Cheyennes banded against Utes.

"White man, pause and gaze around,
For we tread now on haunted ground!
So said a chief to me one day,
As along the shore we wound our way."

(So begins the Legend of Grand Lake by its first white settler, Judge Wescott).
