When the students enter the classroom to begin classwork, they surprisingly
find all of the desks gone. Instead, a dozen small rings of golden chalk
with odd symbols took their places. "Please put all of your belongings against
the side wall, and step within your won circle. All you'll need today is
your wand." Following the professor's orders, students eagerly flung their
packs filled with books against the walls. Every student was anxious to learn
what would happen, and what this hands-on experiment was about.
"I'll begin this lesson with a question; do any of you know anything about
protective circles?" All of the students just stood there quietly. "Well
then, I'll show you." Professor Ready then began to advance on your class's
clumsiest member. He raised his wand, and yelled "Furnunculus!" A
dazzling jet of light shot from Zez's wand, and began to zoom at the fidgetty
person at top speed. Once it was about two feet away, though, the bolt took
an immediate jut downward, and was sucked into a snowflake-like drawing.
Shoving his wand back into his pocket, Zez Ready continued, "That shows the
power of runes on protective circles. Now, if I could just step into one of
the free circles." Finding a spare protective circle, the professor then bellowed,
"Alohomora. " The door across the room opened, and within was a towering
deadly dementor. Mysteriously hovering above the ground, the creature began
to go for the same fretful student. The innocent fifth year locked up with
panic, and seemed to have his eyes fixed on a hideous thought. Everyone but
him stared down at the golden words Expect patronum inscribed on the
circle that flashed silver, and a misty fog covered the innocent boy. The
dementor backed away into the other room, and closed the door behind it.
"Protective circles are used for exactly what they are called; they are
circles that protect you. They could have spells and runes written around
them; whichever spells I write are the ones that shall protect me. If I was
going to go out and destroy every dementor I could find, I'd write spells
like Expecto patronum, and runes like courage, strength, and protection.
In the 1600s, necromancers would create these circles so they could easily
commune with the dead. If the spirits were unable to touch the necromancer,
the spectre would have to subdue to the wizard's commands."
"Some of you may be a bit curious why the chalk the lined with glistening
gold," Professor Ready said as he added an odd trapezoid to his circle.
"In Alchemy, gold is the most sophisticated and powerful substance in the
world. Now, if you were going to go fight a dementor, would you rather be
protected with lead, or gold? Now, everyone, could you please clear your
circles? I want you to write down spells and runes you'd want to use to
protect you. Make sure you write in between the two lines, now! You may
begin once I hand you some gold-lined chalk"
