January 12, 2004: pool of open water where Grand Lake pours
into the Adams Tunnel and flows under the Continental Divide
to Estes Park. This pool almost never freezes over. It often gives
a fine reflection of the Never Summer mountains. Click on photo
for a bigger view of the mountains. This is the east end of Grand Lake,
near a boat launch and several picnic tables around a mostly sandy
shore. The snowcapped ridge in the upper left is Blue Ridge. In the
winter, one can snowmobile from here to Blue Ridge. Instead of
crossing the lake, one can take Tunnel Road along the lake to the right.
