The southern end of Shadow Mountain Lake shown here has the special property of having open water for fishing and kayaking throughout the winder.
An open channel of water occurs because huge amounts of water get pumped up from Lake Granby and into a canal to Shadow Mountain Lake in the winter.
A short ways around the the bend to the right one has National Forest Land along the shore with a paved boat launch and the beginning of miles of hiking
trails along the shoreline or beyond the lake where the Colorado River flows to Lake Granby.  One can get to Grand Lake by boat from Shadow Mountain Lake.
